Emergency Fundraising for Toilet for Kids – Can You Help Us Raise $683?

As we all anticipate the re-opening of schools in Liberia and the return of the kids that attend our school, the Board of Directors of the school is launching an emergency fundraising for a toilet for the kids.

The current toilet being used by the kids is a dilapidated, unhygienic, and unsafe two-door makeshift structure that is yards away from the school building. It is a pit-latrine put up as a temporary structure more than ten years ago.

The current toilet used by both students and teachers

When it rains, the water level increases and water fills the pit, making it nearly impossible for the kids and the staff to use it. Besides, the kids have had to be extra careful over the years before they accidentally fall into the pit. Moreover, authorities of the government agency responsible for education has warned us not to allow the kids to use it because it is unhygienic and unsafe.

As a result of all this, the Board has decided to fix a toilet within the main school building. The space is already available, as it was constructed as a residential building.

The Board is planning to cut a partition creating two toilets inside the building for the installation of two commodes, one for the boys and the other for the girls. The toilet will use a bio-digester septic tank, which makes use of a quite small septic tank space constructed using some special chemicals that make it difficult for the septic tank to easily get full.

The total cost of the toilet is estimated to be US$683, broken down as follows:

  1. Bio-digester==========================$400
  2. Two pcs of commodes @$60=============$120
  3. Two pcs of 4” pvc pipe @$12=============$24
  4. Three pcs of 4” tee @$4=================$12
  5. Two pcs of 4” pvc clean out=============$10
  6. One pc of 2” pvc pipe @$10============$10
  7. One m/s pvc glue @10================$10
  8. Two pcs of 4” pvc elbow @$4===========$8
  9. One bag of cement @$8===============$8
  10. One pc of 4”×2” pvc reducer @$4===$4
  11. One pc of 2” pvc elbow @2========$2
  12. Workmanship==================$75

As indicated, the total estimate for the kids’ toilet is $683.

We members of the Board are appealing to all of you out there to kindly help us raise the funds needed to fix the toilet for the kids before the school can re-open. We will very highly appreciate any financial or material contributions you make towards this project, as we don’t want the kids to suffer again this year from the lack of a good toilet to use.

Please help us help the kids. Please help the kids to get somewhere better to use. Please help us raise the funds to fix the toilet. We urgently need your help. Any contributions you make for the sake of the kids will be very much appreciated.

If possible, we would like to raise the funds by August 20 to give us time to complete the work before the school reopens for the new school year.

You may send your contribution directly to Paul Yeenie Harry in Liberia via MTN Lone Star Mobile Money transfer, using +231881895978, or to Lena and Anders Marner in Sweden, through PayPal at https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=95NTAM63YT8WE. Please help us! Even if it’s $10 you wish to contribute, we will highly appreciate it because it will help us to raise the $683.

2024/2025 School Year Ends

As the academic year in Liberia runs from September to July each year, our school has closed for the 2024/2025 school year, planning to reopen in September for the 2025/2026 school year.

The closing program, which brought together students, teachers, parents, and others, was held on Sunday, July 13.

Some graduates of the Kindergarten and Sixth Grade classes

There were various activities during the program – recitations, songs, special remarks, and so forth.

The program also saw the graduation of students from Kindergarten, as well as from sixth grade. Those graduating from sixth grade will leave the school, as the school stops to grade six.

The guest speaker was one Mr. Alex Dahngbah. He encouraged the attendees on the essence of education and leadership.

During the delivery of his speech, he said: “Education is like a magical key that opens doors to new worlds. It helps us understand our surrounding, discover our passions, and develops the skills we need to become leaders of tomorrow.”

Also, speaking on behalf of the Board, Madam Monica Sackie thanked the parents for entrusting their kids in the care of the school. She also informed the parents and students that there will be some changes in the new school year, including change of the school’s name, change of the uniform, and some adjustments in the fees charged.

Some relatives of students

Having successfully ended the 2024/2025 school year, we members of the Board wish to express profound thanks to all students, parents, guardians, teachers, and well-wishers of the school.

We also wish to extend special thanks and appreciation to our friends and sponsors in Sweden, headed by Lena Thorne; our friends and sponsors in Norway, headed by Sissel Lavoll Martinsen; and our friends and sponsors in the United Kingdom, headed by Mary Smith.

As we look forward to the opening of the 2025/2026 school year in September, it is our prayer and hope that we and our friends and sponsors will continue to work together for the good of the education of poor children in Liberia, especially in Buchanan.

Once again, heart-felt thanks to all!

Board to Introduce Changes in School

The Board of Directors of Help Liberia Foundation Community School is planning to introduce major changes in the school, beginning the new school year.

Some members of the Board

The new changes will affect the school’s current name, uniform, fee-payment arrangements and other areas. In short, the school’s current name will be changed to a new name, and the current uniform will be changed to a completely new uniform.

Also, considering current demands and circumstances, the fees charged per student or per class level will be adjusted.

The Board also intends to fix a modern bathroom within the main school building, as the current bathroom being used by the students is in a very terrible condition – it is unsafe and unhygienic.

There will be a special fundraising for that purpose once the final estimate is known. The Board intends to complete the bathroom before the re-opening of school in September.

It is our prayer and hope that the new changes to be introduced and the construction of the inside bathroom will be positively received and will improve things at the school.

Monica and Becky Visit HLF School

Madam Monica Sackie, a member of the Board of Directors of the school, along with a friend of hers, on Tuesday, June 16, 2025, visited the school in Buchanan.

Madam Sackie’s friend, Madam Becky T. Oba, is a professional nurse working with Medicines San Frontiers in Monrovia. She is interested in education and in working with kids.

During their trip, they interacted with both the staff and the students. During their trip, also, they discussed with the staff about activities connected with the end of the school year and other plans about the school. It was a one-day visit.

Our profound thanks and appreciation to Monica and Becky for the trip and for interacting with the kids and the teachers.

Thanking Sissel and Ida

The Board of Directors of our school, Help Liberia Foundation Community School, wishes to express profound appreciation to Sissel Lavoll Martinsen and her daughter, Ida Martinsen, for showing kindness to the school.

Ida at the school in December, 2024

As you may recall, we sent out an S-O-S call in February for assistance relating to teachers’ salary payment due to financial difficulties facing the school.

In the process, Sissel and her daughter, Ida, two of our Norwegian guests who visited the school last year, made a financial contribution, which was sent to Lena, for the payment of teachers’ salaries.

Sissel and Ida

We are profoundly grateful to Sissel and Ida for thinking about and helping the school. Thank you, Sissel and Ida! We are grateful!
